Of course, every [meta] tag has a close tag, so perhaps we'll get answer someday, and the song can end after all...

Wow! Truespace came with the DirectX programming book I bought years back. I used Caligari on the Amiga some, too. I guess I'll have to look at it again now.
I was wondering if they were going to do that...
EDIT: Here's the SDK page. (It appears to have Python support, too.)
You know what, I'm done with this discussion. If you're going to take it this seriously and hijack a thoughtful conversation into an argument just to prove some vague point about economics, then maybe you need to remember that this is a game we're talking about. This is not the DRC forums. We are not IC here. Can you please keep that in mind and be a little less terse?

Hear, Hear! It's our job as amateurs to overlook important parts... It's not like any of us are taking this sort of thing seriously.

BTW that was an interesting point about the coins being dated 150 years after the fall... that might indicate Kadish got the coins from someplace else, rather than from the D'ni. Perhaps he was looting ages, like Sirrus and Achenar. They had even less use for any form of currency, since the D'ni were long since gone.

The only reason there would need to be engine code is if Cyan implemented a realtime preview for the max viewports. I've seen game engines do this before. I haven't heard anything about it actually being this way. In fact I have no idea how it works precisely. Is it just an exporter or are there custom objects that are implemented? That's why I'm eager to get my hands on it see what it does.

Matt, Matt, Matt.... You don't need to get out of the way or 'quiet down'. Separatism isn't the answer either; even the Amish and Hutterites have their share of problems. Social perception/ineptitude/grace... why do you think men get married!?
As far as my comment on the previous post. I was just indicating that Cyan could do much more at the 500,000 subscriber level: ie your numbers were conservative. $2.1mill/mo. would give a lot of opportunity.

Well, no, I didn't have the actual quotes handy- I think I realized that a while in and forgot to change it- but I think calling that hearsay is a little harsh. However, I'd rather not search the DRC forums for that, I was just trying to make a point.

I mean, personally, I think releasing some sort of "enhanced" Myst Island that is more "real" is all well and good, but really not necessary, especially when there's evidence that may suggest that the "real" island is not too much different from the one we're all familiar with.

Besides, why would you wanna give up all that nostalgia?

I have a vision of sitting down on the beaches of Myst Island with a couple of good buddies just relaxing, and personally I hope (though I'm not counting on it) that that one day comes into fruition.

Alright now, back to serious business. Here's a joke for the ladies.

Apples and Wine
Women are like apples on trees. The best ones are at the top of the tree.
Most men don't want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting
hurt. Instead, they sometimes take the apples from the ground that aren't as good, but easy.
The apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they're amazing.
They just have to wait for the right man to come along, the one who is brave enough to climb
all the way to the top of the tree.

Now men...men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it's up to women to stomp
the crud out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.

Cyan's means of paying for servers, bandwidth and labour, as currently envisaged, is the fee they have set. Obviously I don't know how they've worked out their budget, but they're not doing so well that they can afford to lose on the deal, so I think we have to assume they've set a rate that works for their projected level of membership. And I would further expect them to have made sure their projections err on the side of caution.

The previous versions closed precisely because they were locked into a "grow or die" paradigm which demanded a rate of growth that couldn't be generated or sustained with the game as it was. Until Uru, the only version that didn't die, survived because it was free of that constraint. I believe MORE, for the moment, will be able to do the same, unless it is pushed to "grow or die" before it is ready. If that happens, it will die, like a plant taken out of the greenhouse before it is mature enough to survive in the outside climate.

I don't believe MORE should try to be "all things to all men," or aim to provide incentives for playing that are not part of its nature. I think it should be allowed to be what it is, here in the greenhouse, till we know how UCC is going to work out. I think we have quite a few competent and talented Writers who have indicated here a willingness to contribute content without financial inducement. If it is decided to allow some form of financial compensation as an option, then we'll have even more. Either way, there will be new content.

But what if it never becomes hardy enough to take it out of the greenhouse, to try to make it grow beyond our community? Does that make it a bad thing, a thing that should be shut down? Of course not. As long as Cyan is willing and able to maintain it, as long as they lose nothing for keeping it open, and as long as we continue to enjoy it and contribute to it, why should it not continue? Does it really have to grow...or die?
